According to Bob Nightengale, Manny Machado is in search of a $400 million, 10-year contract following the current season.
When asked if he will remain a Padre next year, Machado responded that he intends to opt out after this season. Despite rejecting the Padres’ recent proposal, Machado proposed his own extension deal for $400 million over a 10-year period starting in 2024.
While he expressed interest in possibly extending his stay in San Diego, he also exhibited a clear understanding of the broader context. Machado will turn 31 in July and just four months after that, he will have the option to become a free agent and potentially surpass the remaining five years and $150 million on his current contract, which many believe he could easily do.
The Padres have been big spenders, and it makes sense that they’d want to re-sign “their guy.”

Recent contracts for other players like Trea Turner, who signed for 11 years and $300 million with the Phillies after declining $342 million from the Padres, and Aaron Judge, who returned to the Yankees for nine years and $360 million after San Diego offered him $400 million, illustrate the possibility of higher payouts. Additionally, the Padres and Xander Bogaerts agreed to an 11-year, $280 million deal, surpassing the shortstop’s expectations.
“So far this year, I’m a Padre, but who knows after next year. The team knows where I stand in my situation and with the opt-out coming, and I think I’ve expressed that I will be opting out after this year,” Machado explained.
“But I think my focus is not about 2024. I think my focus is about 2023, what I can do for this ball club, what I’ve done for this organization and what we’re going to continue to do here. I think we got something special here brewing, and I don’t think anything’s going to change.”
The Padres recently gave Yu Darivsh a massive extension. However, free agency looms for many other players they might be interested in signing. Shohei Ohtani is one of the stars speculated. It makes sense too considering he’d have a chance to play for a contender in practically the same geographical situation.
Juan Soto complicates things as well. The Padres shelled out basically their entire farm system for him. He still has two years left of arbitration, however those negotiations turn ugly at times and can damage relationships, as we have seen with the Brewers and Corbin Burnes. If the Padres offer Soto and or Ohtani massive deals, which they will get…do they have enough for an older Machado as well?

Manny Machado is a Dominican-American professional baseball player who currently plays as a third baseman for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on July 6, 1992, in Haina, Dominican Republic, and grew up in Miami, Florida.
Machado was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round of the 2010 MLB draft and made his MLB debut with the team in 2012. He quickly established himself as one of the top young players in the league, earning a reputation for his strong defensive skills and powerful hitting.
Machado spent seven seasons with the Orioles, during which time he was named to four All-Star teams and won two Gold Glove Awards for his defense at third base. In 2018, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers mid-season and helped the team reach the World Series, where they lost to the Boston Red Sox.
In 2019, Machado signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres, making him one of the highest-paid players in MLB history.
