Despite playing on an injured ankle, Patrick Mahomes worked his magic when the Kansas City Chiefs needed it most, leading them to a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday night’s game. This win marked the Chiefs’ second NFL title in four years and earned Mahomes his second Super Bowl MVP award as a two-time NFL MVP.
Mahomes finished with 182 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, and an insane 131.8 QBR.
Mahomes said “I thought guys just embraced the moment. In that first half, we were playing and doing some good stuff, but I felt like the guys were getting consumed by everything around us.”
In the first Super Bowl game featuring two Black starting QBs, both Mahomes and Jalen Hurts performed admirably. Hurts played phenomenally posting 373 total yards and 4 touchdowns.
However, Mahomes took it up a notch in the second half despite re-aggravating his sprained right ankle. “It took everybody to win the game,” Mahomes said.
Additionally, Coach Andy Reid, who previously struggled to win big games in Philadelphia, was able to defeat his former team, earning his second ring with Mahomes and the Chiefs.
“We wanted to get this so bad for him,” Travis Kelce said. “His legacy in Philly lives on forever. … There’s a lot of pride in knowing that he’s had success in two different organizations, but this was the better one.”
James Bradberry was called for a holding call against Juju Smith-Schuster on a critical 3rd down that ultimately sealed the game, and the Super Bowl for the Chiefs.
Bradberry admitted “It was holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide.”
The Chiefs secured their second Super Bowl victory in 2019, five decades after their first win. Mahomes spearheaded a fourth-quarter comeback against San Francisco, erasing a 10-point deficit in that game. Surpassing expectations, Mahomes did it again as the team managed to clinch another Lombardi trophy in just three years.
Despite going 14-3, the Chiefs were seen as underdogs all year. In a competitive AFC West division, and after trading away star receiver Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs were an after thought.
They took it personal.
At 27 years old, Mahomes became the third player to earn two NFL MVP awards before turning 28. Additionally, he holds the distinction of being the youngest quarterback to start three Super Bowls. Furthermore, Mahomes was able to break the so-called MVP curse, becoming the first player in nine seasons to win the Super Bowl in the same year after nine straight players lost.
On the flip side after securing their first-ever Super Bowl title five years ago, the Eagles (16-4) made an impressive run with a new coach and quarterback. Nick Sirianni succeeded Doug Pederson in 2021, and Hurts replaced Carson Wentz in the latter part of 2020.
Head Coach Nick Sirianni said, “We use this pain, we use this failure to motivate us so we can make it a strength.”
Despite Hurts playing out of his mind, he made an unusual error when he fumbled without being hit while attempting to evade pressure. Nick Bolton seized the opportunity, recovering the fumble and running 36 yards to score a touchdown, tying the game at 14-14. Throughout the season, Hurts had committed just eight turnovers, comprising of six interceptions and two fumbles.
Both teams look to have a promising future.
