Russell Westbrook is set to join the LA Clippers after finalizing a contract buyout, according to his agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports, who spoke to ESPN.
Following the buyout agreement with the Utah Jazz, which involves the remaining $47 million owed on his expiring contract, the former NBA MVP and a nine-time All-Star guard will become a free agent and subsequently join the Clippers in Los Angeles.
“There’s an opportunity for Russell Westbrook to start for this Clipper team,” Adrian Wojnarowski said.
The discussions focused on Russell Westbrook’s willingness to assume a specific role with the LA Clippers, one that would utilize his skillset. The 34-year-old will be joining a Clippers team that is aiming for a championship and features his former teammate on the Oklahoma City Thunder, Paul George.

As part of a three-team trade, the Los Angeles Lakers traded Westbrook and a 2027 first-round draft pick to the Utah Jazz. After a turbulent season-plus with the Lakers, Westbrook took some time to decompress and assess his options. He adapted to a sixth-man role for the Lakers, where he averaged 15.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in 28.7 minutes per game.
Since being drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics (now Oklahoma City Thunder) in 2008, Westbrook has played for several NBA teams during his career, including: the Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, and now the Clippers.
He has been named an All-Star nine times and was named the NBA Most Valuable Player in the 2016-2017 season. Westbrook is known for his athleticism, high-scoring performances, and aggressive style of play.
